Mental health has been taboo for many years. At one time (and sometimes it still happens) if you said you didn’t feel emotionally well, you might be labeled as “crazy”. Over the years, this taboo has gradually been removed. Although there is still a long way to go, it is very important that in the present day we can talk about topics such as mental health without stigmatizing it.
We’re sure you’ve heard someone talking about your physical health and telling you to take care of it by eating right, exercising and going to your annual doctor’s appointments. Besides, if you fell and got a fracture or scrape, you’d immediately go to the doctor, right? The same thing would happen if you had a toothache: you would go to the dentist.
Why is it so different with mental health? Let’s remember that it is just as important as physical health and that both complement each other in order for us to have a healthy life. Therefore, if you feel that something hurts inside you, do not try to minimize it, but rather seek help or communicate it so that other people can support you.
Letting that discomfort go will not make it go away, often quite the opposite: it will grow until you do not know what to do with it. So, if it is within your means, seek help from a mental health professional.
And if you want to start taking care of your overall mental health, today we have several tips that might work for you. Ready?
#1. Exercise regularly. As we said, mental and physical health go hand in hand. That’s why dedicating 30 minutes to exercise is a way to improve your mood and your mental health.
#2. Eat healthy and drink water. A balanced diet and good hydration are important to maintain our energy and stay focused on what we have to do during the day. And if possible, we should avoid overindulging in caffeine.
#3. Make sleep a priority. Yes, a priority! Sticking to our sleeping hours is very important to feel that we are really rested. Therefore, it is recommended to stay away from screens and lights at least one hour before bedtime so that our brain can disconnect.
#4. Practice gratitude. We know that not every day is perfect, but noticing the daily highlights of our life is a way to focus and be grateful for the positive things that happen to us.
#5. Do an activity that relaxes you. It’s up to you, but you can experiment with meditation, journaling, yoga or some activity that allows you to focus on your breathing and is a space for you to unwind.
As you can see, there are little things we can do to take care of our mental health on a daily basis. But if this doesn’t work for you and something inside you feels wrong, remember that you can always seek professional help. Taking care of your mind is also self-love.
Love, Maka.
